Dry Suit Gloves.....

Hi

Advice needed regarding drysuit gloves?! water temp is cold! and i find using gloves takes the enjoyment factor away when you cant feel your fingers! Also i find mitts great but a pain in the arse getting on especially on a second dive. Now i needed to ask myself, do i need to man up or possibly look down the dry lock glove system?

I enjoy underwater photography and was wondering does dry lock gloves degrade your dexterity a lot? anything must be better than 7mm mitts!

I have been looking at SiTech or the Northern diver. Northern diver seem easier to get hold of, but reading forums the sitech seem to get a lot of praise.

Also do these gloves actually keep your hands warmer?

One more question..for someone who generally dives no deeper than 40m do i need to equalise the gloves or would the squeeze be still comfortable?

Any advice would be great [Link]

How much lead?

I have just moved over to a twin set and am heading over to vobster in a coupple of weeks time to try it out however i have a small problem, i am unsure how much lead to take with me. whilst this normally wouldnt be a problem and i would just bung it all in my bag/car and go i am now relying on the tran to get me and all my kit to diving minus the tanks which my very nice budys transport for me . as i found out a coupple of weeks ago a train and a large dive bag with a lot of lead doen not mix well at all so dont want to take much more than i have to.

in fresh water with my single 12 and the same amout of thermals i would take 10kg and use 12kg in the sea. so any guesses amout how much i would need in voibster and the sea with twin 12's? my rig has a CD back plate which is about 2.2kg i think. [Link]

142?!!

I've just gone to my profile.

What on earth is so interesting about it that other people have visited it 142 times!! Is it 142 people, or could it be less than that, with some people going a few times.

Of course, I know why one or two might have done, and I can see the last 10 visits. But it does feel a bit weird knowing who has had a wee looky. [Link]

A Pension Plan that might just work...

Like many people, I have been shocked by how badly my company pension plan has done over the last few years. The net result is that 30 years of significant contributions will earn me a pension of under £6000 pa!

Time for Plan B.

Young Eric The Fish wanted a "real electric guitar" from St Nikolas. He was lucky, and now has lessons every week. He is loving it and hopefully will be earning a packet as a mega star in a couple of years. Cue the cute video :

New zip-northern diver lack of service

I bough a delta tech semi dry from northern diver about 2 years ago which never got much use as I had sense to buy a drysuit after 4 dives in it in autumn :embarasse

I digress.. the zip on the full suit part has broken off, it doesn't need a new zip fitted its just the sliding bit you pull to open/close. I sent 2 emails to ND but got no reply and finally today called them..........

Repair department said they couldn't help and transferred me to the shop who advised me that I'd have to buy a new one they don't repair or stock zips for the semidry.

I asked if they could give me the spec for the zip so I could look on the web but they said no we dont have you'll need to buy a new suit!!

Rant over! Shocking lack of service by ND

Does anyone know where id be able to get a zip to fit or the actual size reference? [Link]

Aquanox - Cancelled

I've received a text from NDAC today, not enough people have completed entry forms, so I'm afraid the event has been cancelled.

Sorry about that, I was looking forward to seeing filming you all making complete fools of yourselves....

I'll probably still be heading that way anyway, who else'll be there that weekend? [Link]

1 TON MINE LOCATED OFF PORTLAND

Earlier this afternoon a survey vessel reported to Portland Coastguard what appeared to be a Second World War 1-ton parachute mine lying on the seabed in the middle of Portland Harbour. The mine had been located by sonar equipment during a routine shoreline survey and lifted from the water but carefully replaced once it was realised what the item was.

Hi to all!

Hi All,

Yes you guessed right another newbie! Please let me do a little intro for you:embarasse.

I am a 40yr old Hair getting more grey by the day I.T. security consultant, living between Northampton, Banbury & Buckingham with one wife Helen , one son, and one 14yr old Ocean diver daughter Alex

I am currently the Equipment Officer at Stowe SAC. I am a BSAC Advanced diver OWI and still have a ABLJ in my garage! Although I must confess that I use a wing these days.

Stowe SAC is probably as far from the sea as you can get - which has its advantages and disadvantages Everywhere is accessable, but any salty stuff is 3hrs away .

My favorite dive sites are:
Lochaline - Sound of Mull
St Abbs & Eyemouth
Hodge Close - Lake District
Any other places to get wet :-

I hope I can contribute as much as I take from this fantastic community!

Safe Diving & Warm regards, Andy [Link]

Conditions - South Devon/Cornwall?

Hi All,
I'm a newbie to the site - so I will introduce myself on the correct forum later tonight - please bear with me :-

I have planned a diving trip to the Tor Bay area this weekend for my club Stowe BSAC furthest point from any UK coastline :- Fri-Sun shore diving. We have had a unusual winter with almost constant North Easterlies for some time instead of the prevailing westerlies - wiping out the vis in the Tor Bay area :- I am told it will be day's or weeks before vis improves significantly.

So the question is..... are there any alternative dive sites in South Devon / Cornwall with resonable vis and good shore diving???

As we are as far from the sea as you can get - I have many members Ocean and Sport divers that have never been in salt water - I am therefore keen to give them a resonable intro to UK sea diving :-

Any help / suggestions will be greatfully recieved.

Warm regards, Andy [Link]

Blue o Two Don’t believe the hype

The trip sold as Best of Wrecks?? and wasn’t

Back in October 09 we booked a trip on Blue Fin to do a “Best of Wrecks” week and specifically to dive the Salem Express. After talking with one of their Directors Nathan Tyler at the show, he informed us that the Salem Express was part of the standard itinerary on this trip, but subject to weather, which we fully understand.

Based on this and their website, as it also lists this as one of the wreck you take in on the trip we booked two places.

Following booking we ordered addition 6 litre side slung cylinders as we were told that the boat had Nitrox and could mix up to 40%.

Once on board the dive guide played your introductory DVD to the boat which claimed the boat could mix Nitrox between
22-40%. After the DVD was played the dive guide went on to say that the boat could only mix 30% as a standard mix with is totally unacceptable when paying £60 for a service that they claim to offer but don’t deliver on.

What made it worse still is if we had know we couldn’t get 40% for accelerated deco then we wouldn’t have ordered the side slungs at £30 per cylinder!

It then got even better after the dive guide went through all the wrecks we were going to dive with no mention of the Salem Express!! After questions from myself and other on board he explained that you never do this when the boat is routed as it was stating in Hurghada and ending in Port Ghalib no mention of this either by Nathan or on your website or at the time of booking

After much debate the following morning it was announced we would dive the Salem Express but we would have to give up two other wrecks to do it, which is a very poor excuse, based on how much time was lost on the whole trip.

Throughout the week whenever there was a night dive it was on a REEF, so in total out of 19 dives 5 were on reefs, so much for Best of Wrecks. .

One the final evening we set off supposedly to dive the Elphinstone on the last day and were told by the dive guide that dependent on the weather we may not get on the reef but we would see in the morning.

What a surprise then to be told the following morning it was too rough, what is even stranger is that we were some 2hrs North of the Elphinstone and only 30minutes from Port Ghalib, so there was never an intention to dive that site anyway.

At the dive site we had ended up at Marsa Shouna for the last two dives the visibility was poor -5m and this was on a sandy bottom not a wreck in sight! On the last day all diving was complete by 12.00midday. As the flights home the next day weren’t until the evening why did they feel we needed to be out of the water for over 30hrs? This is absolutely disgusting as from start to finish on the whole trip nearly a day and a half was wasted of our holiday time we paid for to go diving.

The real reason behind all of this is that the boat we were told was gong Deep South this week so it cut time out of the travelling for you, so we ended up in Port Ghalib. We were also told that the dive guild needed to be at a company meeting in Hurghada that evening at 7.00pm so this is why we needed to be in port for 2.00pm and cut our diving short.

Blue o Twos meetings and future trips should not impose on a holiday paid for by myself and other alike as it’s poor planning and lack of organisation on Blue O Twos behalf that caused this and it is totally unacceptable.

So in brief
1.The Salem Express was sold as part of the trip and was never on the original itinerary
2.Nitrox is advertised at between 22-40% but is limited to one mix which passengers have to pay full price for.
3.We ordered 6 litre side slungs as an extra, based on the availability of 40% but ended up with 30% at best so incurred addition expenditure for no reason as we wouldn’t have booked them if we had known.
4.The trip was sold as a Best of Wrecks week and out of 19 dives 5 were on reefs
5.We spent the last day kicking our heels due to your internal meeting and planning arrangements

Due to the above myself and my buddy have spent in excess of £150 we wouldn’t if the truth had been told about the Nitrox situation originally.

You may like to warn other dives to tread carefully when dealing with Blue O Two as unlike them I don’t believe their hype [Link]
