State of the Layne, part II
Ok, It seems I have a bit to live up to
Well the metal was certainly there, it was covered in lots of lovely wildlife.
The evening sun was lancing in, like so many golden fingers, making the interior of the wreck look like a great, underwater cathedral. Shoals of silver fish teemed about the wreck, like extras in a Cecil B. DeMille epic, vast gardens of Plumose anemones covered the plates for as far as the eye could see - like large furry mushrooms.
Near the stern, a cobalt and gold colored male cuckoo wrasse was jealously guarding his harem of females.
Never have I felt so at one with nature, cocooned in the sea's cool embrace, nurtured by the serene feeling of goodwill and gently rocked and comforted by the subtle current in an almost womb-like experience.
But you don't want to hear about that, you want to know how things have been re-arranged in Steptoe's yard, how the cruel sea has tormented and teased at the once majestic James Eagan Layne, now at repose in her watery resting place, away from the prying eyes of her creators.
We landed on the bow and dropped to the sea-bed so, then started down the port side of the wreck. During the descent, I was looking for reported damage to the bow, but apart from some railing missing probably because this is where the permanent shots are normally tied, I did not notice a great deal of difference.
The biggest damage seems to be about a third or so back on the port side, where a large section has fallen to the sea bed, still attached at the rear of the fallen section.
It looks like a pretty clean break, and the thickness of the hull can be seen in cross-section.
Looking over the broken section, an extremely neat weld has been exposed, much to my embarrassment, I don't know the details of construction of these ships, but if I had to guess, I'd say the the weld was part of a prefabricated section later riveted together as it looks very neat - to my untrained eye - to have been done in situ, but perhaps I'm underestimating the skill of the welders.
This was the biggest change I saw. We continued as Kirstie says, down the port side at seabed level and there is section where you can swim under, that I don't remember from before, it looks similar to a section on the Starboard side.
The broken off stern section shows no great changes.
We then swam back along the centre section of the wreck, not excessively fast, but not at the speed that we'd explored the outer section.
I think there is a bit that's fallen down, on the bow at about the 10-12m depth level, but I'm not entirely sure.
At Aquanauts we have been trying to push a little deeper with out Thursday night dives, however this one was booked by a chap visiting from the States and he'd asked for the JEL, it turns out the his wife, who also dives, but not on our waters or her own, California is not as hot as most people think ; , has a relative, her Grandmother IIRC, who worked on Liberty ships, she told us they were known as 'Rosies' as in 'Rosie the Riveter', her grandfather had been a merchant seaman and served in them.
As Kirstie says, the dive was so memorable for all 10 divers, but none of us can really say why that should be, vis was average, journey there and back was a little bumpy, light was overcast, so no cathedral effects - it was just a totally chilled evening
