Epsom Derby Day

Once again we had a fantastic day out at the Epsom Derby this year.

16 met down the clubhouse early on the morning of Saturday 3rd June and had a big メFat Boysモ fry up, washed down with copius amounts of Champagne, and after that we waddled along to the train on-route to Epsom Downs.

We got there well before the first race and managed to get a base all together on the grass near a big screen for all the action. Most of us took a picnic, and more Champagne/wine/beer etc. The trouble was that we had such a large breakfast that most of the food went uneaten!..

There were a few small winners throughout the day, but try as I could, nobody would listen to the メtipモ I had been given of メSir Percyモ in the Derby. I had been spouting the tip since the Thursday to anyone that would listen. I decided to go for broke and put 」50 on the nose ミ and it was on the nose too ミ it was one of the most exciting races for many years with a mere 12 inches separating the first 4 horses, with Sir Percy winning by a nose! ミ it was very satisfying collecting 」400 from the bookie. We had a sweepstake as well, with cash prizes for 1st,2nd,3rd,4th ミ with Gill winning, me coming 2nd, Gerry 3rd and Alex 4th.

There was a great atmosphere, a fun-fair and a stage with live bands etc, and it was very very hot. All too soon the last race had gone, and we made our way out with the hundreds of thousands of fellow Champagne swillers.

A couple of us went back to Gerry & Gills house in Fetcham, where the drinking and festivities continued into the early morning in the quite humid conditions ミ and I lost count of the times I went off to count my 」400!.which has taken less than a week to spend by the way if you include holiday spending money.

Thanks to Alex & Julie for helping out by cooking breakfast and thanks to everyone who came along to make such a great day out. Next year I am going to run the day again but am hoping to take along a Gazebo to set up in an appropriate area to use as a base, hopefully nearer to the live bands, and to have a group picnic on the downs ミ rather than the breakfast which filled us up too soon for the day!

My next bet was 」50 on England to win the World Cup, which would net me another 」400 ミ so, COME ON ENGLAND !
