Safety Snippet Number 2
Reverse Profile Diving
BSAC Safe Diving Practices state “When carrying out two or more dives in one day, perform the deepest dive first.” and “Take particular care when planning repeat dives. Where two or more dives are being made the same day it is good practice to carry out the deepest dive first. It is also good practice to achieve maximum depth as early in the dive as possible and to avoid redescending once any ascent has commenced.”
There is a sometimes misquoted independent study that concluded there was no evidence that reverse profile diving in some very specific circumstances is problematic. The restrictive circumstances offer room for confusion and are often not compatible with BSAC club diving, there is no evidence to prove or disprove the study, as such the above BSAC recommendations remain valid.
